π» Year-Round "Costumes" Tips for Founders
Halloween falls on a Monday this year, which means you can be whoever you want during the workday. It's also the one day when Imposter Syndrome and Wearing Many Hats are actually visible in the life of a startup founder. These Founder "Costumes" come with associated stress, so we thought we'd give you some tips on how to combat them. Need better tips? Check out our Resource Page.
How to fight Imposter Syndrome
πͺ Β Authencity is a strength. Confidence is good, but overconfidence can be toxic. Make a routine of checking in with yourself to recognize who you are and who you want to be. You'll never be an imposter as long as you are true to yourself.
π₯ Set realistic goals. Aiming for the stars and landing on the moon isn't as great as it sounds. Are you normally happy when rerouted from your original destination? Try creating small achievable steps that concretely support you and your path to success.
πΆββοΈ If you talk the talk, you gotta walk the walk. Be careful what you commit to, and make sure you hold yourself accountable. No one likes a broken promise. Need an accountability buddy? DM one on Kernal.
π₯Έ Fake it until you make it. Sometimes it's okay to act bigger than you are. As long as you are growing into those shoes, there's nothing wrong with being ambitious.
How to wear many hats
π€ How's the fit? If you're uncomfortable in one role, maybe it's time to find someone else who can wear that hat. A hat that looks silly on you might fit perfectly on someone else.
π Put on your thinking cap. Make sure this is in the repertoire. Finding a role that is educational, is important to you and your startup's growth.
β How are you helping others? Whether a customer or coworker, identify a role that adds value to those around you.
π© Β Organize your options. Are you capable of throwing on a different hat for different scenarios? Having an organized workspace is key to quickly switching hats. Embrace having a hat for every opportunity. You never know what'll get into and what kind of hat you'll need.
There are plenty of hat emojis π§ββοΈ, and I'd have fun creating a Dr. Seuss rhyme out of them all, but the main takeaway is that wearing many hats should be a strength, not a weakness.
As you embrace your multi personalities this weekend, remember that there is no wrong way to be you. Just because you wear one costume one day, doesn't mean it has to be your complete persona.
